Vision Network Annual Meeting
The Vision Network annual meeting will be held October 17th 2008 at the University of Montreal, located at Roger Gaudry pavillon, 2900 Chemin de la Tour. More details will be given in a near future.
Invited speaker: Christian Hamel, MD, PhD
Dr Christian Hamel completed his specialty in Ophthalmology in 1987 (Médaille d’argent, Université Paris XI) and then completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the NIH between 1987 and 1991 in the departments of Immunopathology & Retinal Molecular Biology. During his fellowship, he discovered that the gene RPE65 is responsible for the isomerization of all-trans-retinol to 11-cis-retinol in the pigment epithelium during phototransduction and also discovered that RPE65 is associated with a few retinal hereditary pathologies. After is fellowship, Dr Hamel accepted a position as a research associate in the laboratory of «Neurobiologie de l’Audition» at the «INSERM» in Montpellier (France), where he became responsible of a team called «Génétique et Thérapie des Cécités Rétiniennes». Thereafter, Dr Hamel completed his doctoral studies (1994) and acquired, two years later, the ability to supervise master and doctoral students. In 2000, he became the research director of the «INSERM» and more recently (2007), became a professor at «Université de Montpellier I» and at the «CHU». Moreover, since 1992, Dr Hamel is a consultant for hereditary retinal disorders in the department of ophthalmology at the «CHU» in Montpellier. He, thus, dedicates one day per week to clinical activities, which allows him to build a bank of patients affected with retinal pathologies including RPE65 retinopathies. In addition, in 2005, he became director of the «Centre National de Référence pour les Maladies Rares-Affections Sensorielles Génétiques» at the «CHU». Finally, in 2003, Dr Hamel became director of the unit «INSERM 583» (Physiopathologie et Thérapie des Déficits Sensoriels et Moteurs) at the «Institut des Neurosciences de Montpellier».
