CIHR is consulting us
VISION RESEARCH OPPORTUNITY FOR
THE NEXT TEN YEARS
CIHR launches a special request to all stakeholders
to submit to the Institute of Neurosciences, Mental
Health and Addiction (INMHA) their views on the
challenges of research in Sensory and Communication
disorders for the next ten years. The aims are
to identify the challenges and suggest means to
resolve them.
This constitutes a unique opportunity for Vision
Health Research.
There is a frightening increase in the rate
of vision loss in our aging population from diseases
for which we have no cure. We must act now to
reduce this loss.
Stakeholders of all sectors and disciplines
are called to contribute, provincial authorities,
voluntary organisations, scientists ranging from
basic science to clinicians and population health
and health services research as well as the private
sector. Specific problems of our Health Systems
are also to be addressed, including the clinician
scientist career support, clinical workforce and
access to Health care and privatisation.
The best proposals will serve as catalysts in
the development of the Institutes 2006-2011
Strategic Plan and could very likely lead to Requests
for Applications (RFSAs) in these areas.
Briefs are to be submitted by October 15, 2006
(5 page maximum, single space, 12 points minimum;
see attached document for details)
Your views and opinions are important and we
count on you. This is critical to the future development
of Vision Health Research in Canada.
Renewal
submission to the FRSQ
To all the members of the Vision
Network,
The Vision Network will soon submit
a renewal proposal to the FRSQ. We are considering
a redefinition of the current axes. Below, you
will find examples of groups (which already exist
or that could be created) that represent strategic
links between researchers that are involved in
similar research fields. This list is not exhaustive,
and you are therefore invited to complete it by
adding either : 1- a group which already exist
(by stating the members and by identifying the
function) or 2- groups that you would like to
see created (again mentionning members and function).
Examples of possible groups :
1- Research group on retinal diseases.
2- Research group on the normal
and abnormal development of visual function.
3- Research group on visual system
disease genomics.
4- Research group on visual deficiencies
: evaluation of deficits and adaptation strategies.
5- Research group on corneal diseases.
6- Research group on the functional
evaluation of vision : (ERG, mfERG, VEP, Functioinal
imagery, etc. Standardisation of tests and sharing
of data).
7- Research group on human visual
pathology models : Animal models of human pathologies
(glaucoma, ROP, DMLA, diabeties, RP, etc).
8- etc.
Note that your suggestions will be evaluated at
the next meeting of the scientific committee of
the Network which is scheduled for Spetember 20.
Since the research priorities for the next four
years will be determined at this meeting, your
participation is of the highest importance since
the distribution of funds will favour the groups
and themes that will be adopted. Groups will be
invited to submit a detailed plan exposing their
development during the course of the next four
years (2007-2011).
I hope you shall participate in
large numbers in this very important activity,
that will determine the survival of our Network.
I will await your responses before September 20.

Funding
announcements 2006-2007
To all Vision Network members,
The Vision Research Network is
pleased to announce the following funding opportunities:
1- PROJECTS IN PARTNERSHIP IN EPIDEMIOLOGY, PUBLIC
HEALTH, AND HEALTH CARE ACCESS.
The aim of the present program
is to develop knowledge in epidemiology, public
health, and health care access in the area of
visual health in Québec.
The health of populations, the
distribution and incidence of ocular disease in
Québec, the problem of waiting lists for
surgeries, barriers to the use of available ressources
in vision health and low vision are all areas
that are targeted by this program.
Within the framework of this program,
the Network encourages all forms of collaboration
with local and external ressources, in opthalmology,
optometry, low vision, geriatrics, public ressources,
academics, public health, etc.
The Network wishes to aid in conjugating
ressources in other provinces in order for Québec
researchers in epidemiology and public health
in the area of vision may play a leadership role
in Canada in these two areas.
The possibility that this funding
may aid in obtaining additional funding will be
considered in the evaluation.
Deadline : June 1st 2006
2- Equipment funding: An amount
of 100 000.00$ has been set aside in order to
finance the acquisition of laboratory equipment.
The equipment must be used within the framework
of collaborative work to be described in the Partnership
grants form. In order to be eligible, proof
that the equipment will be bought in partnership
must be given.
Deadline: May 31 2006
3- SUPPORT FOR SHARED INFRASTRUCTURE:
An amount of 70 000.00$ is reserved in order to
support infrastructure (data banks, tissue banks,
etc.), that already exist or that are under construction.
Those who wish to submit should use the form Research
Infrastructure Grants. The participation of
another source of funding will be considered as
a significant asset during the deliberations.
The deadline is May 15 2006
4- PROJECTS IN PARTNERSHIP: An amount of 50,000.00$
is reserved to support research initiatives that
will lead to the creation of new research teams.

Grants. The maximal amount is 25,000.00$ per
project and the presence of another source of
funding will be highly regarded during the selection
process.
The deadline is May 15 2006
5- STUDENT RECRUITEMENT: An amount of 70,000.00$
is reserved in order to facilitate the recrutement
of students interested in pursuing their graduate
studies in vision. The candidate should thus be
on the verge of completing his/her undergraduate
studies no later than September 2006. These 10
000.00$ grants will be given to candidates that
are judged to be most promising. In order to qualify,
candidates should submit an application that includes:
A brief description of the project, including:
-A review of the litterature and a hypothesis
(1 page maximum)
-Experimetal methods and anticipated and/or obtained
results (1.5 pages)
-Career ineterest and projects (.5 page).
A copy of the academic record and a common FRSQ
and CIHR type CV
A letter of reference from the supervisor as well
as the supervisor's CV.
Moreover, the supervisor will have to commit to
contributing to the bursary to bring it to an
acceptable level for a graduate student (about
$1500.00 per month).
Note : The candidates will have to submit a scholarship
application to a grating agency with peer review
such as the FRSQ or CIHR during the year supported
by this grant. In order to receive all payments,
a copy of the application will have to be sent
to the secretariat of the Network.
The deadline is May 15 2006
6- CLINICAL RESEARCH SUPPORT: Although the above
mentionned funding is open to both fundamental
and clinical projects, the Network wants to pay
special attention to clinical research in Quebec.
Therefore, we invite interested researchers to
submit projects with clinical impacts in Vision
Health. The fund is aimed mostly at clinicians
and residents that may or may not be associated
with a researcher doing fundamental work. Fundamental
researchers interested in submitting for these
grants should pay special attention to the clinical
impact of their project. An association with an
active clinician may help meet this criteria.
In order to have as much participation as possible,
the amount reserved for this project will be determined
based on the number of porposals received. The
amount awarded will be a maximum of 25 000.00$
per project and participation of another funding
source (including pharmaceutical companies) will
be highly regarded during the decision process.
Interested candidates should submit the form Projects
in Partnership Grants.
The deadline is May 15 2006
