Congratulations
to Walter Wittich
Congratulations to Walter Wittich
who obtaines a master's bursary from the Vision
Network last year. Moreover, he recently won the
gold medal for his presentation at the "Salon
de la Recherche". Finally, he has also received
a Master's bursary from the FRSQ for a period
of two years.
Congratulations
to the recipients
of the CIHR-Baker 2005 studentships
The four recipients are from Québec
and are members of the Network!

Reimbursement
of cost for ARVO and VSS
This year, the reimbursement of
cost for attending ARVO and VSS must be preceded
by a request to the Vision Network as a bursary
receipient. To do so, you need only send an e-mail,
stating your participation in a presentation (poster
or talk) as first authour, the name of your director,
as well as the axis to which you belong. Depending
upon the number of request, their will probably
be more than one student per laboratory that mayreceive
a bursary. Send your request before April 15 2005.
Doctor
Daniel Guitton was Honoured
The Doctor Daniel Guitton, professor
at McGill University (Montreal Neurological Institute),
was honored at the meeting of the Canadian Physiologcal
Societity, which was held at Mont St-Anne on February
6 2005. Among the invited speakers at the symposium
held in his honour, there were some of his past
students, collaborators and friends. Professoir
Guitton has greatly contributed to the advancement
of knowledge in the area of eye movement control.
Among other things, he discovered the existance
of mesenphalic neurons involved in fixation and
proposed a model that explains the visuo-motor
integration requires the control of eye movements.
The Ntework, along with the scientific community,
congratulates Dr Guitton.

Congratulations
to Jean-Sébastien Joyal!
Jean-Sebastien Joyal (a student
with Dr. Chemtob), has just received the most
prestigious CIHR studentship. This studentship
covers a period of four years and has a value
of 70 000$ per year. His project is entitled 'FVIIa-PAR-2
interactions in retinopathy of prematurity'.
Grant
possibilities from the Foundation
for Fighting Blindness.
The Network is willing to help
finance groups that wish to submit grant proposals.
REQUEST FOR APPLICATIONS
Genomic Medicine and Human Development
The Foundation Fighting Blindness in Partnership
with the Institute of Genetics, is pleased to
invite research proposals that will advance the
understanding of the causes and improve the diagnosis,
prevention, and treatment of retinal developmental
disorders that affect vision. The Foundation gives
high priority to studies of clear and direct relevance
to developmental disorders of the retina, including
genetics, molecular genetics, molecular biology,
biochemistry and cell biology studies of human
subjects, animal or cellular models. Recognizing,
however, that the properties of the retina cells
and tissues most affected by these developmental
disorders are often shared by other cells and
tissues, the Foundation also invites more general
studies of high merit on general developmental
processes that have broad relevance to developmental
aspects of the retina.

Harland
Sanders research chair in vision science
The Harland Sanders chair in Vision
Science was officially inaugurated on Wednesday
October 12 at the Université de Montréal.
The ceremony was held in the presence of the University's
administration and representatives of the Colonel
Harland Sanders Foundation. The research chair
was attributed to Dr Maurice Ptito, tenured professor
at the School of Optometry. The commemorative
plaque was unveiled by the president of the foundation
as well as the recipient. The official ceremony
was preceeded by scientific conferences which
were sponsored by Nikon and the FRSQ-Vision Network,
and presided by Dr Christian Casanova. The professors
Ron Kupers (Denmark) and Paul Bach-y-rita (USA)
presented research conducted in collaboration
with Dr Ptito. More than one hundred people assisted
to the different activities, including a cocktail
offered by the Université de Montréal
and a guided tour of the new laboratories associated
with the chair.
