Partnership
between the Vision Network
and the École d'optométrie
We are pleased to announce a new
partnership between the Vision Network and the
École D'optométrie. This partnership
is intended to help the dissemination of scientific
information and to encourage the participation
of students outside of the greater Montréal
area. Towards this goal, we have created a bursary
program that will be administered by the Vision
Network. These bursaries will pay for the transportation
costs of students who wish to attend the conferences organised by the "Groupe
de recherche en sciences de la vision" of
the École d'optométrie. Fifteen
bursaries of $50.00 each will be available for
the winter 2004 series of conferences. An additional
fifteen bursaries will be available for the fall
2004 series. Interested parties should fill out
the form “Demande
pour l'aide à la diffusion par un étudiant”.
Students will be reimbursed upon presentation
of original receipts up to a value of $50.00.
Research
priorities for 2003-2007
Subsequent to its latest renewal,
the Network's scientific committee identified
certain research axes to prioritise, either because
they concern health concerns affecting the Québec
population or to fill a void in expertise of clinicians
in vision health. Priority will be given to grant
proposals that are related to the following themes
:
Projects in partnership dealing with the effects
of normal and abnormal aging on visual function,
such as (but not exclusively) :
1- Macular degeneration related to age.
2- The effects of aging on the cortical processing
of vision.
3- Neurotoxicity and neuroprotection.
4- Genomics, ocular proteomics, and aging.
5- The optical quality of the aging eye.
6- Program MD studying for a PhD and PhD studying
for an MD : the aim is to increase clinical research,
open as rapidly as possible the dialogue between
MDs and PhDs, and possibly create new openings
for PhDs in training. This program also offers
the possibility to create new associations between
researchers via their students and may bring about
new research projects.
This does not imply that the Network will not
accept proposals that do not have a link with
these themes. Nor does it imply that all projects
related to the above mentioned themes will be
funded. The Network's policy remains to give priority
to scientific excellence combined with real networking.
