Special
grant possibility
This is to announce a joint initiative of the
FRSQ Vision Research Network and the Provincial
Network for Research in Re-adaptation (REPAR).
Researchers who are members and the students
of either of the two above mentioned networks
are invited to send grant proposals. These proposals
should aim to develop new collaborations and new
research themes that meet the mission statements
of both research networks.
Proposal I : Research project
The objective of this grant is to encourage the
realisation of a research project that will reunite
researchers in each network. These new collaborations
should be related to themes that interest both
networks.
Specific objectives :
To develop
a inter-network project that would unite researchers
and clinicians that would;
Contribute, via the convergence of inter-network
expertise, an increase of the knowledge base for
problems related to a particular target group
of patients.
Produce preliminary data to establish a base from
which to construct a new project. This project
will then be submitted to granting agencies.
Criteria for evaluation :
Originality
of the project and the pertinence of the project
in regards to the objectives of the program;
The creation of starting points for inter-network
and multidisciplinary projects. The authors of
the proposal should show how their expertise is
complementary. They must also demonstrate that
the project will favour the consolidation or creation
of an inter-network research group.
The proposal must be presented by at least one
full member of each network.
The methodological quality of what is proposed
(according to the criteria used by the FRSQ).
The multidisciplinary starting point means that
a succinct explanation must be given regarding
the contribution of each member of the team in
regards to the realisation of the project.
The team of researchers should cover all of
the fields of expertise required to complete the
project. This concerns both the disciplines and
the methodologies involved.
The authors should explain both the contribution
and complementarity of each of the research fields.
Scientific report : A scientific
report must be submitted no latter than 18 months
after the receipt of the funds by the principal
author of the proposal.
The maximum amount of money allotted is $25
000 for one year and it is not renewable. The
completed forms (see attached documents) should
be received by the secretariat of the Vision Network
no later than December 2nd 2002.

Call for
proposals concerning research partnership
Dear colleagues,
A recent directive from the FRSQ invited research
networks to allocate funds in their budget to
allow for eventual partnerships. This directive
may be summed up as follows : It is crucial that
each network reserve funds in order to participate
and lead partnership opportunities. These opportunities
will emerge, in the coming months, via interactions
with the CIHR and other groups (i.e. the European
Union). These opportunities may include the financing
of a project in tandem with the CIHR, within the
framework of a CIHR strategic group program. Alternatively,
these opportunities may arise under the form of
a preparation of or partial financing of a project
within one of the eight major initiatives that
are to be announced by the CIHR. Finally, these
funds are to be reserved for any future, presently
unknown, opportunities that may arise.
It is with this in mind that the Vision Network
has set aside 80 000.00$ in order to be able to
support such an initiative.
The present call for offers aims to determine
your intentions concerning the eventual large
scale projects that would group together many
vision researchers. The aforementioned funds are
to be used as a starting point, which will ease
the procurement of larger grants from programs
that already exist (i.e. the usual granting agencies
such as the CIHR).
Priority for funding will be given to projects
that are open to the participation of researchers
that are presently in different axes of the Vision
Research Network.
In order to examine the need for such funding
and to verify that the projects meet the above
mentioned criteria, we would like to receive letters
of intent before November 15 2002. This letter
must contain the following information :
Project title:
Short description of the project (approximately
half a page).
The name of the researchers involved, affiliation,
each researchers status within the vision network
(i.e. researcher, associate researcher, fundamental
or clinical).
Limit: November 15
Send the document to: reseau.vision
@mcgill.ca
Thank you for your collaboration.

The annual meeting of the Vision Research Network
will be held on April 12 2002 at the Delta Hotel
in Trois-Rivières.
The registration forms and the final program
of the meeting will soon be available on this
site. You may download the preliminary program
(see the link below). In contrast with previous
years, students must present their work orally
(i.e. there will be no poster session).
One of the invited speakers will be the Dr Giorgio
M. Innocenti of the Karolinska Institutet in Sweden.
His conference is titled: The cortical visual
areas of the ferret: phylogenetic and developmental
issues.
