e chose the Oudjat to illustrate the historical section
of this Web site since it is a symbol of protection
and healing. The eye of Horus also called Oudjat, is
the left lunar eye which originates from the struggle
between Horus and Seth. In the fight, Horus loses his
left eye which is taken by Seth, but then Horus acquires
spiritual sight, the eye of light. The eye was later
healed by Thoth and returned to Horus.
The
Vision Network is sponsored by the Fonds de la recherche
en santé du Québec (FRSQ). This governmental
agency instigated the creation of research networks
in the early 1990s in order to promote collaboration
within the research community in Quebec and to give
Quebec a competitive edge in matters targeted by our
health policy. Hoping to concentrate the efforts being
deployed by vision researchers and to increase vision
health in Quebec, Dr. Hélène Boisjoly
and a small team of researchers created the Vision Network
in 1995.
In
order to increase research capabilities and vision health
in Quebec, the Network grants subsidies for infrastructures
such as databases, equipment, research projects, post-graduate
training, etc...
The
research efforts of Network members will lead us to
a better understanding of normal and pathological visual
function and will help us develop better therapeutic
strategies and solutions such as early detection of
diseases affecting the eye and brain, visual learning,
behavioral rehabilitation of visual function and finally,
visual implants.
Today,
more than sixty clinical and fundamental researchers
from seven different universities - Concordia, McGill,
Laval, Montreal, Sherbrooke, Université du Québec
à Montréal, Université du Québec
à Trois-Rivières are Network members.
Members
are affiliated to the departments of ophthalmology of
four universities in Quebec and to a dozen fundamental
science departments (psychology, biology, pharmacology,
biophysics) and clinical research centers (Centre Hospitalier
Universitaire de Montréal, Centre Hospitalier
Universitaire de Québec, Centre de recherche
Côte des Neiges, Centre de recherche Lucie-Bruneau,
Centre Universitaire en Santé de lEstrie,
Centre Universitaire en Santé McGill, Hôpital
Maisonneuve-Rosemont, Hôpital Sainte Justine,
Hôpital juif de Montréal, Laboratoire dorganogenèse
expérimentale, Hôpital pour enfants de
Montréal, Institut neurologique de Montréal).
